Young and old equines require special – but very different – diets. Younger horses need proteins for growth while seniors want a high fibre content as they no longer consume as much grass or hay as they used to. Both require vitamins and minerals.


Only feed your horse a diet designed for equines. Lawn clippings, toxic plants, mouldy feed and large amounts of highly fermentable fruits such as apples can lead to colic or gastric issues, or even be toxic to horses. Sudden changes in diet are also dangerous, so make any alterations gradually, over a couple of weeks.
